The Mathematics of Creativity
A commentary on the artwork of artist Stanford Slutsky…
To fully appreciate the talent of artist Stanford Slutsky, it helps to have paid at least a little attention in math class. Stan’s use of geometric shapes bends the mind as well as challenges the eye. Using basic shapes, and blending the shapes with fabulous hues of varying color shades, Stan creates a sense of motion and wonder in all of his designs. Simple shapes are combined and arrayed in patterns that move and change before a viewer; complex optical illusions, all dependent upon Stan’s amazing grasp of geometric, mathematical relationships and design.
Stan’s more recent works, on wood with acrylic paints, are cleverly constructed with magnets. The magnets permit the viewer to move around the shapes and colors to create new designs and patterns, the options are virtually limitless.
Mr. Slutsky does not limit himself to a standard rectangular background, but instead, will also use spherical or triangular forms on which to work his magic. Each piece is perfectly measured, balanced and executed. The more one studies each work of Stan Slutsky’s, the more one stands in awe of his complete mastery of his material and design and the infinite possibilities of his imagination.
Each artwork has a number as part of the title. The number represents the actual position the work holds in Mr. Slutsky’s lifetime of creativity.
Four excellent examples of his work follow.
#259 "My Colour Wheel" is the 259th work of original art created by the artist. The 3D wall art construction is a 44" diameter round with a 2" depth. It is comprised of wood, glue, medium density fiber board, 220 feet of dowel rods and acrylic paint in a full gamut of color shades. The wood panels spiral out from a central circle, keeping the eye in full motion when you view the piece.
#258 "Sphere II" is the 258th work of original art created by the artist. It is a 46" diameter round, with a depth of 3", constructed of hand cut wood rectangles of varying size and color, glue, magnets, plywood and acrylic paint. While the individual rectangles can be moved into different positions, as each is individually mounted on magnets, those tempted to do so would be hard pressed to come up with an improved color arrangement than that selected by Mr. Slutsky.
#257 "Triangle", the 257th creation of original art by the artist, is a fabulous 42" x 48" x 2" construction comprised of hand cut and painted wood, glue, masonite, magnets and acrylic paint. In total, mounted upon the triangular background, there are 66 pieces of wood in one size and 18 pieces of wood in another size. The placement and shading of the wood pieces creates an impression of dimension in addition to the dimension created by the magnetic mounting of each piece.
#256 "Random Variables”, the 256th creation of original art by the artist, is a 24" x 36" x 2" construction comprised of wood, glue, medium density fiber board, dowel rods and acrylic paint. Each square, with its varying tones of one color, has been mounted on magnets and then arrayed in groups of 4 of the same color, creating a wonderful patchwork design, which can be readily modified by the viewer. Again, the viewer is cautioned against doing so as the artist’s arrangement defies improvement.
A final note, these works need to be seen in the original to be fully appreciated. The colors and dimensionality are best seen in the original, not as two dimensional images.
